Q & A

What drew you to aviation?: Need to cover long distances in a short time; love fo flying

How long have you been involved in aviation education?: I am an aspiring flight instructor

Do you have a memorable aviation experience you'd like to share?: See Cirus Pilot May/June 2013 (Vol 8 No 3) for my experience of learing to fly in the Rocky Mountains after 30 years of flying in the eastern US

Why did you join SAFE?: I want to become a flight instructor and improve the general aviation safety record, particularly in glass cockpits/technically advanced aircraft

What would you like to see change in aviation?: Educational standards and safety requirements need to come from the aviation community, not from the government. The system needs to reward safety in a meaningful, monetary way, not just with certificates and pins form the FAA. We need to change significantly the way we teach critical decision making and reward pilots who do it well. We need to foster and develop a mentoring system for pilots that is an ongoing process that spans more than just recertification events such as the BFR and the IPC.

Any suggestions on how the above might be accomplished?: Work with the FAA to continue to revise and refine the Practical Test Standards. Partner with insurers to provide genuine, meaningful rewards (e.g., lower rates) for pilots who complete continuing safety education and maintain a safe flying record. Develop more extensive scenario-based instruction. Train more often in IMC.

Any accomplishments in, or noteworthy contributions to aviation and/or aviation education you'd like to mention?: None yet.

Who are your role models in aviation?: Richard Collins, John and Martha King, Doug Stewart and, Mac McClellan, Lane Wallace, Jeff Skiles, Chuck Yeager, Martha Lunken, Paul and Tom Poberezny, Dick Carl

Anything else you'd like to add?: Let's figure out a way to link the EAA Young Eagles program and SAFE. A perfect partnership.
