Q & A
What drew you to aviation?: When I was 5 years old, my father took me up for my first ride in a Cessna 172. I was so scared at the first thought of flying that I remember crying and asking about the landing. However, once we got in the air I fell asleep and couldn't wait to get back in the air again. After that, I was hooked.
Do you have a memorable aviation experience you'd like to share?: About 25 years ago, circa 1994-ish, I was taking flying lessons in Illinois. On the day my instructor told me to stop on the taxiway and stepped out with his handheld radio, I flew my first solo flight (a memorable experience for any pilot).
As I taxied back to the runway, I called the tower and said, "this is my first solo flight. Do you think we should warn everyone in the pattern?"
The controller, quick-witted as he was, quipped "oh, now you have me scared!" We had a good laugh and I was cleared for the series of touch-and-go's.
Why did you join SAFE?: I joined SAFE because I not only want to be the safest I can be while in the air but also because I'm considering becoming a CFI someday.
Anything else you'd like to add?: I'll add more to this profile as inspiration hits and time permits.
