Q & A

What drew you to aviation?: At the age of 6, I announced I would be an airline pilot. Made that happen at age 23.

How long have you been involved in aviation education?: Earned my CFI in 1983.

What's your favorite part of what you do in aviation education?: Watching my clients gain confidence in their equipment and their capabilities.

What's your least favorite part of what you do in aviation education?: Telling clients I have to charge them.

Do you have a memorable aviation experience you'd like to share?: First solo, of course, first time in the left seat of a B737-800 – Expressway visual to Runway 31 at LGA. My last flight in the 777 from London to LAX – on the winter solstice with a full moon, watching the sun go down at noon and the moon come up, then setting again. A recent trip in my Cessna where I landed at 25 airports in Northern California new to me, just to say I've been there.

Why did you join SAFE?: I appreciate what the organization stands for, I respect the people who are already members, and want to learn more.

What would you like to see change in aviation?: Less student drop outs, fewer pilot-caused accidents. Oh, and lower AvGas rates!

Any suggestions on how the above might be accomplished?: Better instructors, more recurrent training. Not sure about the price of gas…

Any accomplishments in, or noteworthy contributions to aviation and/or aviation education you'd like to mention?: I got the Angel Flight West Command Pilot Orientation briefing approved as an FAA Wings program. I'm working on revitalizing my local airport pilot association.

Who are your role models in aviation?: Bob Hoover, "Sully" Sullenberger, and all my CFIs along the way.

Anything else you'd like to add?: I'm involved with the Southern California Airspace Users Working Group as an attendee, Angel Flight West as a Mission Orientation Pilot and member of the Safety Committee, the Fullerton Airport Pilots Association as the Vice President (and speaker scheduler), and I'm a FAASTeam Lead Representative in the LGB FSDO.
